[Mich VHF UHF Society] Vhf + beacon modes?

James,

I believe that you are correct, that CW and the data modes are the only ones allowed in the spectrum allocated to beacons, at least on 6M and 2M. The situation may be different on the higher bands. I believe that modes allocated to the spectrum is the key, not whether it's a beacon or not.

I agree with the concept of further reach. But that can come with higher power (within legal/practical limits, better antennas & siting). But an equal consideration should be "usefulness to its audience". A beacon based on esoteric modes may be an interesting project to construct, but if none of its potential audience use those modes, it's a waste of time. SSTV is out for regulatory reason, and what would be the point of sending an APRS string (which stands for Amateur Position Reporting System) when the beacon position never changes?
