Interesting discussion, but in the short, it doesn't matter what you
enter in the file, ARRL doesn't care.

Yes, RY was originally (and still is) the descriptor for RTTY, before
the days of widespread use of 'other digital modes' that are now
common in VHF contesting. The original spec for the cabrillo format
used by the ARRL for contest submissions was also developed before the
widespread use of 'other digital modes'.

I'm not certain, but I believe that even today, the only valid
cabrillo designations for mode is CW, PH and RY. Using 'DIGI' would
probably (I say probably, not certainly) result in a bounced log from
the contest robot.

I use N1MM for logging - actually, now N1MM+. With the radio(s) under
computer control, the default value for mode in the cabrillo output
file would be PH while running JT65 or FSK441, since, as Marshall
noted, the radio is in SSB mode. I donl't think this can be changed
in the current program version. If it CAN be changed on the fly, I
welcome being held by the hand and educated, as I currently go into
the cabrillo file and manually find and change all the WSJT contacts
from PH to RY post contest (GASP - changing the log after the contest
is over - I feel the wrath rising amongst those HF purists who still
might be slumming around us pathetic VHFers) If it can not be done,
perhaps a 'enhancement' to N1MM+ is in order.

So, since its been shown that both RY and PH are acceptable to the
contest log adjudicators, one can conclude that either can be used.
It would be helpful to hear from someone in a official capacity - if
such a person exists that has any interest in what goes on the the VHF
world (winky-thing)
