I was the EM04 Lawton station that Sam heard working the EM79 station. I
have been leaving the subreceiver for my Kenwood TS2000 (which is FM/AM
only) on 144.200 this summer in hopes that an Es opening would break the
squelch or show up on the S meter. Well today it paid off. I came inside
from my afternoon job in 100 degree temperatures and got on 6 meters to see
the S meter on the subreceiver bouncing around. I figured I had better get
the main receiver over to 144.200 to see what was happening!

I first heard WB8LNG signing with W0RT in Kansas, so called him and after a
couple of minutes we completed. He is in EM79 and this was at 2134Z, and
then worked KC8GAE also in EM79 at 2135Z. A few CQs on 144.200 didn't
yield anything so I went over the 144.174 FT8 and worked the following
stations:

2139Z K4MY EM74
2141Z KC7RW EM73
2143Z WB4JWM EM83
2156Z WA9DU EM69
2205 KF8MY EN84
2228 VE3KRP EN58

Also copied stations in EN91 and FM06 on FT8. There seemed to be 2
different Es clouds, one open to GA and NC, and one to OH/MI and ON.
Worked 6 new 2 meter grids to put me at around 161 grids on 2m. Lets hope
for a repeat tomorrow!

Station here is a Kenwood TS2000 at 90 watts to a Cushcraft A270-10S
dualband yagi at 15 feet. It has 5 elements on 2 meters on a 6 foot boom,
so a large station isn't required to get in on the Es fun!
