Sorry for the extra interruption but I should clarify that my JT9 comment was in context of my own thoughts of a suitable digital "CW replacement" with minimal bandwidth, particularly on a 222 project I've been tinkering with.  JT65 or JT4G are better performing and more robust against frequency imprecision, and JT4G in particular seems popular with many microwave beacons.

Another link I came across was http://www.rudius.net/oz2m/ngnb/ which provides another view of "next generation beacons" with some design info if anyone is interested.
